• We have been going to St. George Island every year since 2010. We love it! We actually joke that it’s a well kept secret and we want to keep it that way…but I can’t resist telling you about it.

    Accommodations

Let me start here because it sets the tone of the island.

About 90% of the dwellings on the island are single family homes (that’s just a guess by me), so it’s a very chill vibe that’s not crowded like many other beaches or beach towns. In the center of the island there is a lighthouse and the public beach, and some businesses off the beach, then there are houses for miles in each direction.

We always stay on the beach side, either beachfront or across the street. There are also houses on the bay side. It always feels like a world away if we drive over there but the island is really only a few blocks wide.

Anyway most people do weekly rentals through Collins, Cape and Coast, Fickling, etc. There is also the St George Hotel, and the Buccaneer, which people have a hard time saying with a straight face because it’s a bit run down, but kind of the main option if you aren’t coming for the whole week.

We usually book a year in advance. If you know what you need and like, you can just book for the next year after your trip. You can still find places if you wait but you’ll have fewer choices and might have to make compromises.

    Things to Do

I want to be honest with you, if you are looking for an action packed, adventurous family vacation, St. George Island may not be right for you. The main thing to do is go to the beach! We normally have 1 or 2 of those big pop up tents, and we basically camp out for the day on the beach. The water is a great temperature, and waves can vary in their roughness but swimming is almost always an option. There is tons of beach to walk, or you can fly a kite. A lot of people fish from the beach, we don’t so I don’t know much about it. We actually usually see them catching small sharks. Don’t worry though, I have never heard of a shark attack near St. George Island. There’s also kayaking, some of the house rentals will come with credits for gear rental. You can just launch right from the beach in front of your house.

There is a lighthouse on the island which is open sometimes to climb up. Being honest again, we have never done it. Can you tell, we REALLY like the beach?!

There are a few things to do off the island. Apalachicola is a cute town just 15-20 minutes away.

    Getting there

Like many beach destinations, I believe most people come by car, even from as far as the Midwest! Especially snowbirds. You CAN fly though, either to Panama City or Tallahassee. Then it’s a 1.5-2 hour drive depending on traffic. Panama City is slightly farther than Tallahassee and more prone to traffic but each airport is so small that I’d recommend considering both and just picking the best flights. Once you land you’ll most likely need to rent a car.

    Avalon, NJ Review

We just had the BEST time in Avalon! I have been going since I was a kid, and my dad went before that as a kid. And before THAT other ancestors were going to the Jersey Shore, so it’s literally in my blood. But even if you don’t have that connection it’s still an awesome place to visit and I will tell you why!

    The beaches

The beach or beaches (it’s one loooong 7 mile strip of beach) are some of the best in the world. They have light colored fine sand, that they do rake every day so there is a reason you are not going to find a lot of rocks or other debris. The water is cool, but swimmable. Warmer than Cape Cod, cooler than Florida. It feels so good on a hot day. The beach is pretty flat so you get these nice waves perfect for boogie boarding. Boogie boarding is also in my blood apparently as my 9 year old picked it up this year and was catching waves in no time at all. One thing that I have not encountered other places is they have lifeguards and they are pretty strict. You can only be in the water in front of the lifeguard stand (every 2nd or 3rd block) and they won’t let you go too far out. The lifeguards are there 10am-5pm, and outside of those hours you can swim wherever you want. Our recent trip there was just me and the kids and having the lifeguards there helped me relax about watching the kids in the water. There is kind of a vibe of a lot of rules there, so I understand that could turn some people off, but I don’t mind.

    The food

There are a few places I want to highlight. Ice cream is an important part of the shore life. We always went to Springers as kids. It’s in Stone Harbor—Avalon and Stone Harbor are the 2 towns that make up the island. Springer’s is very yummy. On our most recent trip we tried Sundae Best in Avalon which is also a longtime pillar of the community. They have 2 locations, we went to the one on the boardwalk.

I’ll be coming back later to add non ice cream food recommendations.

    Activities

For our family this is one of the things that is making or breaking a vacation these days—activities for kids. Avalon scores high in this area. The beach of course is an activity in itself. There is also the bay on the other side of the island (just a few blocks!) to explore. One highlight of our trip was kayaking out on the bay. My grandfather used to bring his sunfish sailboats down and take us sailing on the bay. It was fun, but also work as I recall. Kayaking was a little more relaxing! We rented kayaks from Island Water Sports in Stone Harbor. At their dock they also have an inflatable water playground which looked SUPER fun. We didn’t have time this time but it’s on the priority list for our next trip.

    Accommodations

This is a popular topic of conversation within my extended family. The typical thing to do is a weekly rental from one of the real estate companies in town. These are usually Saturday to Saturday, sometimes Friday to Friday. They range anywhere from $3,000 to $20,000+ (!) for the week. The best location is “beach block”, meaning you don’t have to cross a street to get to the beach. Parts of the island have their little quirks too. If you are roughly 25th to 35th you’ll be within walking distance to the Avalon business district AND the beach. Along with the park near the small boardwalk and arcade.

Around 60th-75th street is a little quieter including at the beach because the island is narrower there so there aren’t as many blocks of houses.

Another option is to do a condo rental, which is good if a Saturday to Saturday rental doesn’t work for you. Most of the complexes have pools, a nice feature for kids.

If you are within driving distance of Avalon, or even if not, I highly recommend it for a family friendly beach vacation!
